Mr. Drouin came in to teach us about turkeys on 5/05. He told us about toms, hens and jakes (young males). He showed us 3 different turkey calls, and we were able to try each one. They made us laugh. We looked through his binoculars, and he set up his camouflage tent, so we could play in it. We learned so much about turkeys—what a great lesson to have on the first day back from vacation!

March 2008
We had an awesome time when we went to the Pinkerton Sugar House on 3/20. We were surprised to see the Easter Bunny walking down the road. She came over and posed for a picture with us. We tasted the sap as it dripped from a big sugar maple tree. It tasted like water. We saw how they use tubing to gather sap from smaller trees in the sugarbush, then we went into the sugar house and Jeremy, a Pinkerton student, explained how sap is boiled down to make maple syrup. We ended the trip with a yummy taste of real Pinkerton maple syrup. It was sweet and tasty. Thanks to Kristina, Lisa, Maria, Wanda and Jenn for driving to the sugar house.

Mr. Hirsch shared his Israeli heritage with us on 3/13. We found New Hampshire and Israel on the world map. We learned that ‘shalom’ means hello and good-bye in Hebrew. We looked at books written in Hebrew (The Very Hungry Caterpillar was a big hit!), which are read from back to front. Mr. H. read a Hebrew alphabet book to us, showed us a yarmulke and Israeli flag, taught us a song with motions and told us about the chamsah, or good luck hand. For our project, we decorated chamsahs with our Hebrew names written on them. We had a delicious snack of hummus, pita bread and orange slices.

We had a great trip to the East Derry Post Office on March 11. The Postmaster let us cancel our own letters (did you all receive a letter?). Then we put our letters in the mail slot, and we saw that they go into a bin. At the end of the day the bin gets picked up by a mail truck, and the letters go on their way. We saw Nutfield’s post office box. Thanks to Postmaster Anthony for showing us around and to Mrs. V. for coming along to the Post Office with us.

February 2008
We had a great tour of the Market Basket store in Londonderry on February 21st. Vanessa was an awesome guide. She showed us the lobsters, gave us some yummy bologna and cheese, showed us the refrigerator, freezer, delivery dock, produce department, meat department and the bakery. We learned how they wrap produce and meat and the bakers showed us how to decorate a cake and make blueberry muffins. Vanessa taught us how to scan items at the register, so we’re ready to go out and get jobs! We left the store with a bag of fruit and baked goods. YUMMY! Thanks to all of you who drove us to Market Basket.

January 2008
Jen Rivard remodeled our dramatic play area into an incredible Post Office. She made an incredible full sized mailbox, as well as several shirts, hats, mail bags and signs. She brought in a cash register, envelopes, stamps, packages, scales, etc. The children loved our Post Office. Thanks so much to Jen for the awesome job on making our Post Office. We’ll be able to use it for many years to come!

Mr. and Mrs. Nikolaidis came in to share Sophia’s Greek heritage with us on 1/03. We found Greece and New Hampshire on the world map and we learned that the word “Yasou” (ya- sue) means “Hello” and “Goodbye” in Greek. We all had the chance to play a Greek musical instrument called a bouzouki, and we listened to bouzouki music. The Nikolaidis’s brought in New Year’s bread, which is called Vasilopita, for snack. One lucky child had the piece with the gold coin in it, and she will have good luck in the New Year. Fortunately, Mr. and Mrs. N. brought coins in for all of the children, so they will all have a great year. We ended the morning with Mrs. N. retelling a Greek folktale called The Eggs and we learned that you can’t hatch chicks from cooked eggs!

December 2007
We gave each other sled rides on burlap bags in gym on 11/18, and then we went to meet a very special visitor---Santa Claus! Each child had a chance to sit on Santa’s lap and make a gift request. Santa gave everyone a small notebook and a rainbow crayon. What a treat! We had a wonderful holiday snack—thanks to all of you who brought Hoodsie cups, fruit and paper goods in. Sharon and I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and best wishes in the new year.

We all enjoyed our holiday sing-along on 12/13.

November
Storyteller Angela visited us on 11/27. The children listened while she told several stories. They loved holding the animal puppets and participating in the action.

We learned about the Pilgrims’ trip to Plymouth on the Mayflower and how the Wampanoag helped the Pilgrims survive their first year in the “new” world. We recreated the Mayflower trip by building a boat out of blocks and we also had a recreated 1st Thanksgiving. On 11/20 we made turkey, stuffing and cranberry roll-ups and we shared our snack with Mrs. Dionne’s class, who made grilled cheese sandwiches. We all enjoyed our feast!

Most of the children enjoyed having their hands and feet painted when we were working on our Thankful Books in the first half of November.

Mrs. Gilroy spoke to us about her job as a flight attendant on 11/13. She told us that her job is to keep people safe on the airplane. She showed us the emergency information card, how to buckle our seatbelts and how the oxygen mask works. She brought some great pictures and for snack we had airline biscuits—yum! (Nov. 13)

We made friendship necklaces on 11/18, and gave them to our friends on 11/19. Each child chose a name from a basket and gave his/her necklace to that friend. We spent a lot of time talking about feelings to make sure that there were no unkind words or facial expressions when the children drew names from the basket. Sharon and I were so proud of how they handled this project—they were gracious about giving and receiving their necklaces.

Halloween, October 30

Firefighters Visit, October 22
We had a visit from the Derry Fire Department on 10/22. It was a beautiful day to sit in the sun and have our fire safety questions answered. Firefighter Kyle dressed up in his gear, but it wasn’t scary. We all had a chance to go through the truck.

Class Visitor, October 11
Mrs. Rivard spoke to us about her Armenian heritage on 10/11. We found Armenia and New Hampshire on the World Map, learned about the Armenian alphabet and listened and danced to Armenian music. Our snack was Armenian Cracker Bread and real string cheese. They were YUMMY!

Music Class, October 4
We made apple crisp on 10/09 using the apples from our Apple Acres trip. We wrote a letter to Mrs. Dionne’s class inviting them to share the crisp with us and they said, “YES!” It was great sharing with our friends, and the apple crisp was DELICIOUS!
We had gym with Ms. Rene on 10/04. We had fun learning how to dribble and trap a soccer ball.Music Class — We had music with Mrs. Dionne on 10/04. We pedaled our pretend bikes when we sang our hello song. We also played the sticks and bells.

We used our bodies to make squares and we sang our Square Song.
Apple Acres Field Trip
In the cold storage room.
We're going on a hayride!
This is going to be fun!
Farmer Sam enjoyed an apple along with the rest of us.
