January 2008
One warm sunny Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 9), the kindergarteners headed out for a walk searching for winter insects and tracks. We saw both! We sketched them and sounded out the words to describe them. The sky suddenly changed. It started to rain, we crouched under a tree to stay dry. It rained harder so we headed back to school. What a fun adventure! (S. Dionne)

Sock Science (Jan. 7): one person describes what they feel inside the sock, their partner listens then makes reasonable guesses based on the description. They have to agree on the object before they move on to the next sock. They are practicing language skills, cooperation and problem solving. (S.Dionne)

December 4 - 7
We always build something for the horses. We played a santa match game. (SM)

We played the jingle sheet. Mrs. Dionne put some pom poms on the jingle sheet. It was fun to see the pom poms fly off.... (SM)

We made a baubled bangled Christmas tree for our December poem. We wrote stories for our nature collages that we made last week. (SM)

We had gym. We played a rainbow fish game. When the storm came in on the rainbow fish game some of us got caught and needed to wait to be saved. (SM)

November 19 - 20
Nov. 29 — One of my many duets, several children have brought in guitars. We play together while their friends sing along. Playing together requires collaboration and it is a nice confidence builder for children. (S. Dionne)
Nov. 19 — After we talked about the first Thanksgiving, we tried doing what the Wampanoag taught the Pilgrims to do: pound dried corn into flour. We talked about growing corn and how you can eat it fresh but also how you can dry it and grind it up to use all year long as flour. It was hard work! (SD)
Nov. 20 — We made friendship necklaces to give to a friend. (The Wampanoag made necklaces out of shells to wear and share at the first Thanksgiving.) We asked our friends what colors THEY liked as we constructed the necklaces and then we gave our necklaces to a friend at the end of the day. They did a nice job using pro-social language while giving and receiving their theirnecklaces. (SD)
November 13 - 15
We had gym. We moved our bodies in, out and around hula hoops. (SM)

We started our Thanksgiving placemats. (SM)

We made horsey cookies to bring on our barn field trip. They didn't smell too good but the horses loved them.

You must wear a helmet when riding a horse. (SM)

We visited Greenwood Stables in Derry. We saw Dominick the donkey. (SM)
Mrs. Mitchell received a back rub from Daenielle, the horse. It felt pretty good!! (SM)
We got to go in the big horse trailer. (SM)
Running in the riding ring.(SM)
Using the mounting block. (SM)
We had a great time. (SM)

November 6 - 8
We had music, sang a body moving song and played the tap-a-dos on Nov. 8th (SM).

We went to the Met for a field trip on Nov. 6th (SM).

October 22 - 26
Gym class with Miss Renee. We do a lot of partner games in class and at gym. Working with a partner requires good cooperation and communication. In this game we had to pay attention to the speed our partner was moving so we could move together, at the end of the field we had to pass our balls under and over each other while standing back to back, a fun challenge! (S.Dionne)
We recently had a visit from the Derry Fire Department. They taught us about fire safety, they dressed in their fire fighting gear and they let us walk through the fire truck. Borrow the class book we made to see all the pictures of the visit and your children's comments about what they learned. (S. Dionne)
The children like to pretend they are firefighters. Watching and listening to their conversations helps me know what they have learned and if they need clarification in any area. We have also sorted "toys" and "not toys"(lighters and matches) during circle time. The firefighters told us never to touch them, to just go tell a grown up. It wasn't until the children actually had the opportunity to see some up close that they really had to put that knowledge into use. They picked up the toys, they pointed to the matches and lighters and I picked them up to sort them. (S.Dionne) October 15 - 19
Our field trip to the Audubon Center.

Look what we made!

October 5 — Kindergarten Insect Mural
The kindergarteners have been studying insects and their habitats.
We have been working on a mural incorporating some of the insects and habitats we saw on our hike to Humphrey playground.
We recently added some watercolor insects. We drew the details first and then painted them.
October 4 — Fall Walk and Popsicles

September 25 & October 4
October 4. Singing "Cat said Fiddle-i-Fee"
Mrs. Carter (out of the pic on bottom left) was also showing the children some fun movements to do with this song.
October 4. At the end of every music session, we play a game where we each try to "put our instrument away without making a sound, and then pass the container to the friend next to you". The children take it very seriously, it's a game but they are learning to treat the instruments carefully and patiently wait for their turn. I let them know that because they are so careful, we will always have good instruments to play at school. Then we all applaud each other for a job well done.
Ocotber 4. Our rules chart. We brainstormed rules, I wrote down everyone's ideas, then I summarized their ideas into these four rules which they
illustrated:
• Be kind
• Be safe
• Listen to the person who is talking and
• Keep your hands in your own space.
We talk often about the imaginary bubble that
is around our bodies that is our personal space and the need to respect other people's personal space.
September 25. We played a cooperative block game. We took turns spinning the board (on the right) and searching for the corresponding shape on theshelves. We assembled a structure together then we spun to disassemble and return the blocks to their place on the shelves.
