Silly Song

Way down south where bananas grow,

A grasshopper stepped on an elephant's toe.

The elephant cried with tears in his eyes,

"Pick on somebody your own size!'

Way down south where coconuts grow,

A catepillar stepped on an alligator's toe.

The alligator cried with tears in his eyes,

"Pick on somebody your own size!"

Way down south where gum drops grow,

A butterfly stepped on a kangaroo's toe.

The kangaroo cried with tears in his eyes,

"Pick on somebody your own size!."

Way down south where palm trees grow,

A ladybug stepped on a rhinoceros's toe.

The rhinoceros cried with tears in his eyes,

"Pick on somebody your own size!"

Mrs. Dionne says the children love this silly song.

We modulate our voices to sing "sadly", "loudly", and "softly."

Moose Got Loose

One day a moose got loose in Moosachusetts,

Everybody was amazed.

How could a moose get loose in Moosachusetts?

The strangest things happen these days!

Mrs. Dionne has fun with this song.

"We change the word moose to goose/Goosachusetts and other words that rhyme with moose…caboose, papoose, Dr. Seuss, masseuse."

Splishing and Splashing

Oh I like to sit in a nice hot tub.

Splishing and splashing and splishing and splashing.

And I like to walk in the rain and the mud.

Spishing and splashing and splishing and splashing.

And I like to play washing dishes in the sink.

Splishing and splashing and splishing and splashing.

And I like to watch while my doggie takes a drink.

Splishing and splashing and splishing and splashing.

Mrs. Dionne finds some songs work well with the younger children. She says,

"This is a fun chant to do with the three-year-old studnts. We use our bodies to 'splash' to the rhythm."

Fun To Share

It's always more fun to share with everyone. (2x)

If you have 2 you can give one to your friend.

If you have 3 you can give one to your friend and me.

If you have 4 you can share with even more…friends.

If you only have 1, there is still something you can learn.

You can still share if you give your friend a turn.

It's always more fun to share with everyone.(2X)

Mrs. Dionne finds music in all kinds of places.

"This song and the Moose Got Loose song I heard (and adapted) from on "The Playground", a great radio show for children on WERS (88.9) on Sunday nights from 5 pm to 8 pm. What was I doing listening to a radio show for children when both my own children have long outgrown a playground? Singing happily along and listening for new songs of course! If you're around a radio Sunday nights, turn off the tv/computer, get or make some rhythm instruments, and listen, play, and sing along!"

Apples and Bananas

I like to eat, eat, eat, apples and bananas.

I like to eat, eat, eat apples and bananas.

I like to ote, ote, ote opples and bononos.

I like to ote, ote, ote opples and bononos.

I like to ute, ute, ute upples and bununus.

I like to ute, ute, ute upples and bununus.

I like to ate, ate, ate apples and bananas.

I like to ate, ate, ate apples and bananas.

I like to ite, ite, ite ipples and bininis.

I like to ite, ite, ite ipples and bininis.

Mrs. Dionne likes to sing this one with the older children. She says,

"This is a fun song I do with the four-year-olds, and the Kindergarten children. All of the lines, except the first two, are done with the “long” vowel sounds. With the K’s we also tried singing some short vowel sounds."

You Sing A Song, I Sing a Song

You sing a song and I’ll sing a song.

We’ll sing a song together.

You sing a song and I’ll sing a song,

In warm or winter weather.

Mrs. Dionne starts each 4-year-old and Kindergarten music class with this old Ella Jenkins song. She says,

"I have never found an opening song that I like better. We change the word “sing” to clap, whisper, hum, march, etc. I always ask the children for suggestions for action words and movements. There is always an endless supply of ideas. I  could do just this one song in our 30 minute session!"

Do Your Ears Hang Low

Do your ears hang low,

Do they wobble to and fro,

Can you tie them in a knot,

Can you tie them in a bow.

Can you throw them over your shoulder,

Like a continental soldier.

Do your ears hang low.

Mrs. Dionne also adds verses featuring other body parts. She says,

"We also sing about eyes, noses, and tongues hanging low as well. For example, Do your eyes pop out, do they bounce all about?' The children love this song; it is a fun song that allows us to incorporate movement too."

Wiggle Hello Song

I wiggle my thumbs like this, I wiggle my thumbs like this.
Hello, hello and how do you do, I wiggle my thumbs like this.
I wiggle my thumbs and fingers like this (2X)
Hello, hello and how do you do, I wiggle my thumbs and fingers like this.
I wiggle my thumbs and fingers and arms like this (2X)
Hello, hello and how do you do….
I wiggle my thumbs and fingers and arms and legs like this (2X)

Hello, hello and how do you do….

Mrs. Dionne uses this greeting song in music class, and it incorporates singing and movement.

"I do this song with the 4's and K's. We start out as still as statues except for our thumbs then add more and more movement."

I Saw a Ghost

I saw a ghost but it didn’t scare me, I chased that ghost right down the street.

The ghost said, “Boooooooooooo” but I said, “You don’t scare me, SCAT!”

I saw a witch but it didn’t scare me, I chased that witch right down the street.

The witch said, “Cackle, Cackle”; the ghost said, “Booooooo”; but I said, “You don’t scare me, SCAT!”

I saw a monster but it didn’t scare me, I chased that monster right down the street.

The monster said, “Google, Google”; the witch said, “Cackle, Cackle”; the monster said, “Google, Google”; but I said, “You don’t scare me, SCAT!.”

This song is a Halloween favorite at Nutfield. Mrs. Dionne sings it with the four-year olds, and the Kindergarten children.

"I wrote this song to help kids feel less scared about Halloween ideas, we talk about real vs. pretend and how Halloween creatures are really people in costumes! Ask your children to show you the movements we do with the song. The tune is the same as I had a Cat."

Fiddle-I-Fee

or

I Had A Cat

I had a cat and my cat pleased me.
I fed my cat under yonder tree.
The cat said fiddle-i-fee.

I had a dog and my dog pleased me.
I fed my dog under yonder tree.
The dog said bow wow, bow wow
The cat said fiddle-i-fee

I had a duck and my duck pleased me.
I fed my duck under yonder tree.
The duck said quack, quack.
The dog said bow wow, bow wow
The cat said fiddle-i-fee.

I had a hen and my hen pleased me.
I fed my hen under yonder tree.
The hen said chipsy chopsy
The duck said quack, quack
The dog said bow wow, bow wow
The cat said fiddle-i-fee.
I had a cow and my cow pleased me
I fed my cow under yonder tree
The cow said moo moo
The hen said chipsy, chopsy
The duck said quack, quack
The dog said bow wow, bow wow

The cat said fiddle-i-fee.

Mrs. Dionne sings this song with the 4-year-olds and the Kindergarten children.

"I use large pictures laid out on the floor to sing this song with; it helps us to know which animal to sing next. The pictures came from the book Fiddle-I-Fee , A Farmyard Song for the Very Young by Melissa Sweet. It would be a great book to read or sing with your child."
